MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) consisting of 16 amino acids (Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Ala-Leu-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro). It is encoded by the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene and functions as a signaling molecule that translocates to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress. MOTS-c is a key regulator of metabolic homeostasis, primarily operating through the activation of the AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) pathway and the modulation of the folate-methionine cycle. Research applications include investigations into insulin sensitivity, mitochondrial bioenergetics, fatty acid oxidation, and the systemic regulation of metabolic adaptation during exercise.
