Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) and a derivative of the endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin. It is characterized by its dual role as a nootropic and an anxiolytic modulator, functioning primarily through the allosteric modulation of GABAA receptors. Unlike classical benzodiazepines, Selank influences GABAergic signaling without the associated sedative or myorelaxant effects. It also acts on the monoaminergic system, regulating the metabolism of serotonin and dopamine, and has been shown to rapidly increase the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. Research applications include investigations into neurotransmitter homeostasis, the modulation of neuroinflammation via cytokine regulation (IL-6), and the enhancement of cognitive processes under stress.
