SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic, mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) designed to modulate cellular bioenergetics. It selectively binds to cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid located within the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 facilitates the organization of mitochondrial cristae and optimizes the efficiency of the electron transport chain (ETC) supercomplexes. Research applications include investigations into the reduction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), the preservation of ATP synthesis under oxidative stress, and the mitigation of mitochondrial dysfunction in models of renal, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative pathologies.
